Kerry's weird response to Swiftvets ad

NY Times:

Senator John Kerry released a television advertisement yesterday blaming President Bush for a campaign by a "front group" of veterans that Mr. Kerry said had smeared his Vietnam record, as he intensified his drive to gain control in a fight that some Democrats said could undermine his campaign for the presidency.

Mr. Bush's campaign denied any involvement with the effort by the veterans challenging crucial parts of Mr. Kerry's war record and sent a letter to television station managers calling the new Kerry advertisement libelous.

Kerry does not appear to have a substantive response to what the Swiftvets are saying. He just wants Bush to make them stop saying it. There is also a strong wiff of Dem paranoia in blaming Bush for actions of people who oppose Kerry. At some point, those who have changed their opinion about Kerry becase of teh Swiftvts ads are going to be confirmed in that shift becase Kerry has no answer other than asking Bush to make them stop talking. The only people who are going to be persaded by his latest ads are those who were going to support him anyway. If he is having to advertise in August just to keep his base, he is in serious trouble.

One of his serious problems is that he is not listening to what the vets are saying. Their leaders are making it clear that they are not acting on Bush's orders and would not respond to Bush if he did tell them to stop. Kerry has offered only speculation as to their "real" motive and is looking both silly and desperate at this point.
