Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, challenged activists to demand that party leaders prove their conservative bona fides.
The more centrist potential nominees for the party, such as Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney, were barely represented at Saturday’s forum.
With the failure of centrist like John McCain and Mitt Romney there is a feeling among many conservatives that nominating another centrist will be another path to defeat.  Cruz has certainly been one of the main messengers of this belief.  In fairness, I think Romney was a victim of Democrat and IRS voter suppression in 2012.  The IRS abuse was aimed directly at conservative activist and financial supporters.  Still the less conservative candidates have a steep climb to persuade conservatives that they can win.  There best bet would be to target the IRS voter suppression effort.
