Kurds who saved Kirkuk from ISIS kicked out by Iraq

NY Times:

Iraqi Forces Seize Kirkuk, in Blow to Kurdish Separatists

  • Government troops took control of the vital city and surrounding oil fields, ousting the Kurdish forces who had controlled the region.
  • The Kurds voted overwhelmingly for independence three weeks ago. The United States, Baghdad and most countries in the region condemned the referendum.
I suspect the Kurds would have had a better chance of negotiating a reasonable agreement with the Iraqis were it not for the influence of Iran which fears a Kurdish independence movement in its own country.  If the Iraqis try to take the Kurdistan region they will likely have a difficult fight on their hands and should not get any help from the US in waging it.

I am of the opinion that the Kurds need to be rewarded for their brave fight against ISIS.  I also think they have a far superior claim to their own state than does the Palestinians.
