Democrats are desperate for a win in an anti-Democrat state

NY Times:

Alabama Politics Has ‘Never Seen Anything Like This’

The wild and ugly campaign for the Senate between Roy S. Moore and Doug Jones, fraught with incendiary comments and molestation claims, has left even veterans of the state’s politics searching for parallels.
Politics took an ugly turn in Alabama after Roy Moore won the primary.  The Washington Post decided to see if it could confirm rumors of Roy Moore dating teen girls when he was in his late 20's.  They found a few who said he did.  He has denied any impropriety and apparently many in Alabama believe him despite what the now late middle-aged women say about events 40 years ago.

The controversy has made it a tighter race than it would have been without it, but if Moore wins it won't be because Alabama voters approve of what he is alleged to have done, despite what some in the media have tried to portray.  It will be because of the low regard Alabama voters have for Democrat policies and those who support them.

Jones appears to be a left-wing extremist to most Alabama voters.  His position on abortion is to the left of most American voters, not to mention the more conservative Alabama voters.  He is also out of touch on taxes and job creation.  If he loses it will be because voters don't like his policies and the policies of Democrats in Washington.

If Democrats don't learn that lesson from a defeat, they are going to keep on losing.  Calling it tribalism or saying Alabama voters are backing a "child-molester" is insult politics that will not lead to people changing their opinion of Democrats.
