Why is Mueller's team concerned with contacts with Russian ambassador after Trump was elected?

Washington Post:
Inside the day that set in motion Flynn’s guilty plea: What did Trump know?

Whether Trump knew of the back channel to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kisylak and whether he urged Michael Flynn to discuss sanctions are questions that now loom large in the special counsel investigation.
I think it is completely irrelevant whether Trump knew about Flynn's discussion with the Russian ambassador.  There was absolutely nothing illegal about the conversations and it is still a mystery as to why Flynn would deny that he had the conversations.

In fact, it makes sense that the Trump administration would have conversations with many ambassadors during the period between the election and inauguration.

Flynn's conversations were not nearly as bad as the ones Obama had with Iran before he was even elected.  In fact, just about every conversation Obama had with Iran was probably questionable even after he was sworn in.

This whole line of inquiry is just further evidence that Mueller is pursuing a wild goose chase.  He has not managed to find anything to support the original reason for the inquiry and he seems off on a mission to find anything he can to have an excuse to go after the President and those in the administration.  He is looking for another process crime since he can't find a real one.

Since the NSA apparently recorded the conversations Flynn had with the ambassador, it should be clear that those conversations did not support the Democrats' claim that there was collusion in the election.

There is also nothing wrong with Flynn saying that he thought the additional sanctions against Russia imposed by Obama were wrong.  In this country, people are allowed to have different points of view.  This is not the Soviet Union, after all.
