Searching for angst in Indiana and finding something else

You have to dig halfway through the story to find the quote supporting Trump.  The first half is liberals talking about the downside for them of the Trump presidency.  Most of the current Trump supporters did not support him in the primaries.  Some are still taken back by some of the things Trump says.  But those who do like him do so because of his policies and not his persona.

What I found most interesting is how little they are concerned by most of the complaints pushed by the media.  Like me, they see that as noise that does not have that much to do with what is happening as a result of Trump's policies.

They blame a lot of the negative coverage not on Trump, but on the media. They give him a pass on much of his bloviation and bluster on the grounds that “he’s not a politician”. Indeed that’s ultimately what they like about him. “President Trump is a disrupter,” says Baker. “And I felt politics needed some disruption. Now disruption’s never easy. But it is important.”

The second surprising thing is that, with one exception, they voted for him even though they did not particularly like him. “There’s lots of things he’s said that I can’t defend,” says Daugherty, referring to Trump’s “pussy-grabbing” comments. “And I’m not going to try to.” Talking about Trump’s tweets, Daugherty says: “He just keeps opening his mouth and spews out word-vomit and I cringe, because he doesn’t have a filter. You can think things. You don’t have to put them out there.”

But they weigh his boorish behaviour against what he has done and what he might do. “He wouldn’t be someone I’d want to socialise with,” says one woman who did not wish to be named. “I don’t appreciate his bad manners and his bullying. But I do appreciate his business and negotiating skills.”

Walsh puts it more bluntly. “I would take an arsehole doctor who was going to fix me over a nice guy who wouldn’t. The nice guy doesn’t always get things done.”

It took the reporter a while to get to why Trump was elected, but it looks like he finally swerved into it.

29 % of companies say they are unlikely to keep insurance after Obamacare

Conn Carroll: A new survey of 368 midsize to large companies found that 29% of them are considering terminating their active employee health care plans when Obamacare is full implemented in 2014. Only 71% of employers surveyed said they did not expect to drop their health coverage, while 20% said they did not know and 9% said they were planning to exit. The latest survey, conducted by Towers Watson, echoes an ealier survey by McKinsey & Co. finding that 30% of private-sector employers were planning to drop their employee health insurance coverage by 2014. When the Congressional Budget Office crunched Obamacare's spending numbers, they estimated that only 7% of employees currently covered by employer-sponsored plans would lose their plans. ...
